About Cacao
Cacao Cattery was established in 1971 with a chocolate point Himalayan male named "Silvermore Biscuit" (AKA - Bugsy). Although "Bugsy" wasn't truly show quality, his chocolate point color is where Cacao derives our name. Our focus with our Persian & Himalayan breeding program has always been to produce healthy & well socialized cats that also conform to the written CFA show standard. Our dedication to the breed has been very fruitful, as we are one of the three catteries in CFA history to have reached the Cattery of Distinction, Tier VIII status. Over the past 50 years, we have produced over 250 CFA Grand Champions & Grand Premiers. Our lines can be found in successful breeding programs around the world, though we do prefer to sell within the United States so we can see our cats in the show ring and easily provide help and assistance if needed. We readily mentor new breeders who are interested in showing & breeding these amazing and special cats. We also have retired adults available at times to approved homes.
Although our purpose in breeding is to continually improve the breed, there are inevitably some who do not meet the standards to become show or breeding cats. These kittens receive the same love and care as show kittens & we are pleased to offer them as pets to approved homes who will love and care for them as they deserve. We also have retired adults available at times to approved homes.
In 2003, Cacao established a small breeding program of silver tabby American Shorthairs. We expanded that program to include the increasingly rare American Wirehairs in 2010. American Wirehairs are a very unique and special breed, known for their "wirey" coat type that is not found in any other breed. With a limited gene pool, they can be outcrossed exclusively to registered (pedigreed) American Shorthairs in order to increase genetic diversity. Our main goal with our American Wirehair program is to widen the gene pool using registered American Shorthairs and encourage others to work with this very unique and special breed. In 2022, we made a difficult decision to end our American Wirehair program, but we have placed several of our breeding cats with other catteries in hopes of keeping the breed viable.
